Last year, we had spoken with the county about applying for a grant to have a pond put in as part of the province’s Wetland Replacement Program. They were doing measurements and surveys of the land for our application and it was all looking very positive. Then I got a funny call – we are not able to continue with your application for a wetland replacement because beavers have built a dam where the proposed wetland would be. In essence, the beavers had put a dam where we were applying to have a dam put in and have been making the pond themselves! So actually, this was good news, we get the pond and no fuss. We have had some concerned citizens mentioning that beavers can wreak havoc but so far so good (knock on wood, haha). The pond is looking great and the dam allows overflow to drain, which is excellent because this June was a record month for rainfall. Recently, I noticed some dragonflies, so hopefully they will be able to combat the mosquitoes, which are also at record levels this year! We have not gotten a glimpse of the beavers themselves yet, just some traces. On to the next project!
